Josie Majetić – Handjob
The self-made magazine »Handjob« comes wrapped in plastic. It is more an art object than a journal, it is dedicated to the theme of masturbation. Josie Majetić had the idea of making a magazine about three years ago. She wanted an experimental space, and a product that would balance out her ordinary job as a graphic designer. But how do you speak about a topic you don’t normally speak about? Majetić tried advanced methods of public visualization, in order to present a very private subject. First, she asked friends and acquaintances. Hardly anyone wanted to answer her questions. Obviously, there are taboos!
Therefore, Josie Majetić expanded the range, and focused on the concept of desire as an inspiration and motor of her own creative work, which is reflected in the design of the journal. She wrote about handiworks, prepared a portrait of Annie Sprinkle, and covered the history of pornography. Her articles reflect the many thematic threads running through her extraordinary project. Majetić followed the principle of »learning by doing«: »I wanted high-quality texts, and had no idea, who could write them«. »Handjob« works on the haptic level, too: a special system for opening and folding the pages invites the reader to literally »unfold« the experiences and stories told – in the best sense of the word.
Josie Majetić found a sponsor and could print the magazine. The series production of a total of 200 copies was a real »handjob«: The designer notched, folded and packed each and every one of them - by hand. The pilot will have its sequel, soon: 15 stories told by 15 creative spirits about their very personal hand-job. To be read in the next edition of »Handjob«, the magazine.
