GRANSHAN Symposium in Chulalongkorn University, 27.7.2013
History, Evolution and Tecnical Aspects of Non-Latin Typefaces
For the sake of good order we have to point out that there can be updates in timing and line-up in due to external circumstances.
All lectures will be held in English.
The Symposium is concentrated on two major areas that are focused by the speakers in a collaborative and complementary manner:
SCRIPT AS CULTURAL RESPOSITORY
In the country of character sets
Understanding script as cultural repository becomes easier when we turn to its local context. English has become dominant as the international language of choice. In turn, this element of globalisation leads to a loss or generalisation of local flavour. Keeping this and the importance of Non-Latin Typefaces in mind, it is high time to re-evaluate the concept of script as cultural repository.
SCRIPT AS A TECHNICAL COMPONENT OF CULTURAL ACTIVITY
Archives of human memory
It is widely accepted that script functions as a technical component of cultural activity – and thereby is an integral part of systems of recording. In turn, this means that all media outlets – from books to the web – need to be seen in light of their cultural and socio-political background. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the technological context of script and its impact on cultural activity.
