Sport, loo paper, and pay my rent
»Actually, I wanted to be a photographer. Then they said that there is no future in photography. So I became a graphic designer«, is how Dominik Schatz describes his career. And yet, when he studied in Linz, he combined photography and graphic design. As a consequence, in his advertising projects for magazines like »L'Officiel Homme« or »Interview«, the designer sticks to a clear rule: »Each product requires its own and very unique design.«
Schatz, therefore, does not want to rely on prefabricated modules. Going beyond highly detailed und finely chiselled concepts, he prefers perceivable and clear-cut designs and formal structures, and a typography that triggers the effects desired. Few colours and big-format pictures are the elements of this very straight methodology. The advertising man’s approach in it cannot be overlooked. Flexibility and speed have been important markers of Dominik Schatz’s professional life, something that his design work for »Interview« bears witness to.
With its literary ambitions, an unspoilt quality, and a certain lack of polish, the magazine is moving out of the box. The individual and unique design of each and every edition is another proof of the passionate commitment of its makers to the very product. In its design it covers an amazing variety, ranging from the playful love of detail to maximum simplicity. Aesthetic success is sometimes not about complex design. Dominik Schatz and his projects prove this claim to be true.
