THINKING COVERS
Workshop with Stefan Kiefer
Every new beginning is marked by one’s own, new idea. It is the most important ingredient of every project or product meant to succeed. And then the idea has to be boiled down to its essence for it to be understood and valued by any given person in less than one second. One might say that it is akin to trying to depict the most important issue worldwide on the cover of a major news magazine in a precise and attractive fashion so as to sell more than one million copies – every single week!
Which is exactly what Stefan Kiefer did for 18 years as part of his job, 13 of which he was responsible for the covers of SPIEGEL magazine. Week after week, he developed the cover of SPIEGEL magazine while being responsible for various areas including illustration, photography and carefully chosen typography.
In his workshop “Thinking covers”, Kiefer wants to share his significant experience and expertise from this time. Listening to his numerous anecdotes and doing some practical exercises, participants will learn how to come up with new ideas week after week, how to develop them in a team and how to translate them into images. It is not the aim of the workshop to design a cover for SPIEGEL magazine, instead participants will learn about the universal principles underlying successful covers or products and how best to apply them – in short: thinking covers. The experience thus gained can be applied to many areas of creative work and help bring about success.
Participants interested in hands on experience and willing to design the cover of an invented magazine, “The Generator – The Magazine for Good News”, will be assisted in developing and designing the cover under almost realistic conditions (namely time pressure and very high standards) in a just a few hours. A thrilling thesis, an inspiring idea for graphics and a pithy head line with clean typography. (Participants are asked to bring their own MacBookPro or any other laptop computer with Photoshop installed as well as a good selection of fonts.)
